Activated Charcoal: Your Pores' Best Friend

The first step to achieving incredible and healthy skin is understanding your skin. Many of us have heard the word "pores," probably named as the culprit behind our oily or acne-prone skin. What exactly are pores, why do we have them, and how can we keep them at their best?

Our pores are really just openings to hair follicles, yet the ultimate gatekeepers to our skin's health. Each pore contains a sebaceous gland, which produces oil, also known as sebum. The size of your pores will vary in size and appearance depending on genetics, but can be managed with dedicated skin routines and products that contain ingredients geared towards regulating sebum production. We need sebum to deliver natural oils to our skin to prevent it from drying out; however, excessive sebum production can lead to different skin issues, such as oiliness and acne. Pores left uncleaned can become clogged, infected, and stretched out. Dead skin cells and sebum that become trapped within your pores create the PERFECT equation for pimples. UV rays are also known to cause major damage to pores, weakening collagen production that keeps our pores tight!

At Nora, we use a range of ingredients to combat pore problems, especially in our oily and acne-prone formulas. Ourselves, along with many of our clients, struggle with non-stop acne, blackheads, excess oil, and enlarged and aged pores, so we understand the struggle! One ingredient that has seriously changed our lives is, hands down, ACTIVATED CHARCOAL. Over the last few years, activated charcoal has made waves in a variety of products, including toothpaste and smoothies, but we especially love this ingredient for its excellent skin benefits!

The way activated charcoal works is actually pretty impressive. Charcoal molecules literally attract and draw out bacterias, poisons, chemicals, dirt and other microparticles to the surface of our skin. The molecules gently exfoliate, binding to excess oil, shrinking the appearance of pores, and fighting acne. Activated charcoal clears our skin of all harmful elements, without absorbing necessary vitamins and nutrients. Gentle exfoliation is key to pore health because it is SO important to avoid aggravating our pores and stripping our skin of the stuff it actually needs.

Our Charcoal & Clay Face Scrub and Charcoal & Cucumber Cleansing Bar have become best sellers on Nora, and we are constantly recommending them to clients who struggle with a range of skin conditions. These products are super beneficial for oily and acne-prone skin due to their incredible cleansing qualities and ability to free pores from surplus oil. We also love the scrub and bar for dry skin since they will keep your pores clear of dead skin cells and exfoliate in a gentle manner, leaving your skin smooth and calm.

Here are some other key tips to keeping your pores as healthy and tight as possible:

  • Wash your face in the morning AND at night. You wouldn't believe how much dirt our skin collects throughout the day and while we sleep.

  • Exfoliate at least once a week. We even recommend a few times a week if you experience constant breakouts.

  • Use only GENTLE exfoliants on face, neck, and décolletage to avoid pore and skin damage.

  • Use a toner in your routine!

  • Apply face-specific sunscreen after your morning routine to protect from harmful rays. This pertains during wintertime, too!

  • NEVER AVOID MOISTURIZER! We can't say this enough. Without moisturizer, our skin becomes too dry, forcing excessive sebum production to make up for lack of moisture. This will clog the you-know-what our of your pores!

One major concept to understand is that our pores are the beholders to skin health! To discover more products that benefit pore size, sebum production, and acne, type pore, oil, sebum, or acne into our search bar and explore! We hope this helps on your skin journey!

xoxo
